Calculated variables are very useful for long term process monitoring.  Data collected over a period of time can reflect gradual changes in the process performance.  For example, it would be possible to monitor the condition of a reactor catalyst by observing the reactor selectivity.  When the selectivity fell below the desirable lower limit, the process engineer would know that it was time to have the catalyst regenerated.
