When units are arranged in series, the output of one unit becomes the input of the next downstream unit.  Any variation in the output, will act as a disturbance in the downstream units.  Smooth operation is desirable for several reasons including safety, efficiency and profitability.  With that said, smooth flow rates will aid smooth operation.
