Although much of the equipment in chemical plants is robust, there are limitations which restrict the operating conditions.  Plant operators have to be very careful not to exceed these limitations or damage can occur.  For example, valves, pipes and vessels, although they may be made of steel can only withstand a finite pressure.  Exceeding this pressure will cause them to fail.
